Group Lessons

Group lessons are typically scheduled well in advance and require that you have a block of time. You will share the boat and instructor with 3-5 other students. The boat is selected by the company, typically starting on a small boat (with tiller and outboard motor) and graduating to a slightly larger one (with wheel steering and inboard engine).

Pros:

  1. Very cost effective
  2. Some benefits from watching the others

Cons:

  1. You learn at the rate of the slowest person
  2. Limited “hands-on” time
  3. Fixed schedule
  4. No choice of boat

Private / Semi-private instruction

With private instruction you charter a boat and pay hourly for the instructor. You and the instructor can choose a boat to develop a program that is best suited to what your goals are. You can usually include a friend and/or family member at no additional cost.

Pros:

  1. Learn at your own speed
  2. Make use of previous experience and knowledge (you don’t have to start from scratch)
  3. Learn on your own schedule
  4. Learn on the boat of your choice
  5. Dramatically more “hands-on”, especially at the helm
  6. More opportunity to optimize your learning experience

Cons:

  1. Typically more costs
  2. No opportunity to learn from others
